Official autobigraphy of Ramon Magsaysay Awardee Dr. Prakash Amte. Amte and his wife, Dr. Manda were instrumental in establishing Lokbiradari Project in Hemalkasa in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. Dr. Prakash Amte says, 'When we began work in the vicinity of Hemalkasa in 1973, the local Madia Gond tribe was in the clutches of hunger , disease and superstition. But step, as we want to on building the edifice of our work, their lives got transformed. Now advanced medical services are available here. After getting their education in the local school, the move out to be employed in the world outside. Agriculture has now found its roots here. Hemalksa is thus traversing from darkness to light.'
He adds, "Watching us working at Hemalkasa in such adverse conditions, the two of us as Rama and Sita exiled in the woods. I however say, Sita was at least tempted by the golden hide of the deer but Manda never felt any saying a word, she continued to work with conviction all through her life."
